Endometriosis impacts an estimated 120,000 women, girls and those assigned female at birth and can impact an individuals, physical, social and mental wellbeing. Endometriosis New Zealand recognises the significant barriers that individuals with endometriosis may encounter in the workplace including challenges managing symptoms, stigma and discrimination from employers, managers or colleagues, financial difficulty and working within the confinements of a role.
When we surveyed our community of those with lived experience of endometriosis on their experience, we found that 92% of respondents find it challenging to manage their endometriosis symptoms in the workplace, 88% have had to take sick leave to manage their condition and 48% unpaid leave and 66% disclosed that workplace stress negatively impacts their condition.
To address these challenges our organisation, alongside key experts in the field and our Clinical Advisory Committee have developed a workplace framework comprising of 3 new resources, aimed to equip employers and employees with guides to effectively manage endometriosis in the workplace.

This template is to guide change-makers in the workplace, including; HR staff, business owners, senior leadership and management staff. The workplace policy for endometriosis is a formal document that outlines specific structures, rules or procedures related to creating an “endometriosis friendly workplace”. This is a formal document that sets clear expectations, responsibilities, and guidelines for individuals who influence policy change and culture. Included is a guide to implementing and a downloadable policy template.
