Fine on the outside

Category: Impact on Quality of Life and Impact on Relationships.

Hi I’m Ali, I’m 30 years old and have had painful periods since primary school. I was diagnosed with endo at 21 (laparoscopy). I had Mirena’s inserted in the hope they would help but they just made things worse then i found out about the Jaydess and that seems to be working much better. Like many have mentioned in the stories below, I often get the “but you/she looks fine” comments. I also have arthritis, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, IBS and migraines – none of which are visible but take a massive toll on my work and private life. I work full time in healthcare which takes a lot of my energy. I find holding down romantic relationships really difficult because of my energy levels and endo symptoms. One thing I am extremely grateful for (and I think I’m one of the lucky ones in this regard) is that in my healthcare journey, a very long one at that, the vast majority of GPs and specialists I have encountered have been nothing short of excellent. They never questioned my truth for a second and this was before them knowing my profession too. I know many have not been as fortunate as I have, but there are some really good ones out there. Another is my amazing family and friends who picked me up from hospital after surgery and drop off dinners when im sore. It’s nice in a way reading these stories and knowing you’re not alone, especially when I’m in a slump.. I worry no one will ever want me, kids are out of the question, I’ll lose my career I studied and worked so hard for, lose my income. But then I go for a walk, grab a coffee with one of the awesome people in my life and get over it.. or sometimes I have a cry… or better still watch Netflix and order donuts on Ubereats. Hang in there xx
